Tarangire National Park

A lovely, quiet park slightly off the main safari route, most famous for its elephant migration and birdwatching.

Overview

Many travellers visit only for a few hours or miss Tarangire altogether, leaving swathes of the park virtually untouched.

Highlights

What makes Tarangire National Park worth the journey.

  1. From August to October the park draws one of the highest concentrations of wildlife in Tanzania: wildebeest, zebra, giraffe, buffalo, Thomson's gazelle, greater and lesser kudu, eland, leopard and cheetah.
  2. Herds of up to 3,000 elephants in peak season, one of the largest concentrations in Africa.
  3. Game drives through riverine forest, acacia woodland, ancient baobabs and endless rolling hills.
  4. One of Tanzania's finest birding destinations, with over 500 species including flocks of yellow-collared lovebirds.
  5. The real prize: rare sightings of dwarf mongoose, oryx or gerenuk.
